I was thinking of Richard today while at a concert of Mahler's Resurrection Symphony (my "church" for today, I guess.) While not a typically religious person, I understand Mahler's expression of the importance of each and every life, and the need to say: no, death is not the final word. In Rich's honor, please allow me to add the text from the final movements, in translation:
O little red rose!
Man lies in greatest need!
Man lies in greatest pain!
Even more would I rather be in heaven!
There I came upon a broad path;
There came an angel and wanted to turn me away.
Ah no, I would not be turned away!
I am from God and want to return to God!
The loving God will give me a little eternal light,
Will illuminate me into the eternal blessed life!
Rise again, yes, you shall rise again,
My dust, after a short rest!
He who called you
Will give you eternal life.
You are sown that you might bloom again!
The lord of the harvest goes
And gathers in, like sheaves,
Us who have died.
O believe, my heart, o believe:
Nothing is lost with you!
What you have desired is yours!
What you have loved, what you have fought for!
O believe! You were not born in vain!
Nor have you lived, suffered in vain!
What has come into being must perish! What has perished must rise again!
Stop trembling! Prepare to live!
O pain! You piercer of all things! I have escaped from you!
O death! You master of all things! You are defeated at last!
With wings which I have won,
In love’s fierce striving,
I shall soar upward
To the light to which no eye has soared!
With wings which I have won, I shall soar upward
I shall die, to live!
Rise again, yes, you shall rise again,
My heart, in the twinkling of an eye!
What you have fought for
Shall lead you to God!

Dear loved ones of Richard,
I am very sorry to hear of your heartbreaking loss. I don't think there are really words for times like these that hold the depth of the emotions they try and express, so all I can say is that I cannot think of a family in the world with more kindness in their hearts and whose fate could possibly be more horribly opposed to what they deserve. I am deeply saddened that I didn't get a chance to meet Richard when I was in New York this summer, but I would have loved to get to know such a great member of your fantastic family. Rich did not get the length of time with you all that would have been right, but he was blessed with the most wonderful group of relatives anyone could hope for.
Wishing you all the most sincere condolences in this hardest of times,
Love,
Eloise

Dearest Patricia, Lauren, Joe and family...
Gone From My Sight ~ by Henry Van Dyke
I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone"
Gone where?
Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.
And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"
And that is dying...
Death comes in its own time, in its own way.
Death is as unique as the individual experiencing it.
With love and wishes of comfort and peace at this most difficult time
~ Theresa, Joe and Valerie
