Obituary of John J. Wilkinson

Wilkinson, John J. (Jack) on January 17, 2017 at 91. Beloved husband of Anita (nee Slater); they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on January 25. Devoted father of John (Maryellen), Rosemarie, Eileen Fisher (James), Maureen McCabe (Jerry), and Kathleen. Cherished grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 12. Dear brother of Marian Geoghan. A World War II Veteran, Jack served as a signalman on the Liberty Ship SS Francis E. Wellard in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. He was a lifetime member of Floyd Bennett American Legion Post 1060. Jack was a mailer for The New York Times for fifty-two years. He was a leader in the labor movement and union shop organizer. He faithfully served as secretary – treasurer of Mailer Union No. 6 for many years. Jack was an originating member of St. Bernard’s Parish A.K.A. “The Tent People”. He was a longtime Breezy Point Surf Club member who proudly flew an Irish flag alongside his American flag. In lieu of flowers, donations to OperationSmile.org or Boys Town will be appreciated. The visitation for John will be held at Marine Park Funeral Home on Thursday January 19, 2017 from 2:00 - 5: 00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernard Roman Catholic Church at 10:15 AM - the family will be meeting at the funeral home by 9:15 AM. Immediately following the Funeral Mass, the Committal Service will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery.
