Darling Joe, from all your “Princesses of NY” we send you deepest love, and our sincere sympathy to your family. Every Wednesday night at Gilda’s Club, you came to laugh with us, cry with us, curse with us, listen to us complain about our boobs (& other bits & pieces) getting pummeled in mammograms and biopsies and surgeries and radiation and chemo. You told us we looked beautiful (even when we were feeling down that our cancers had robbed us of our self-confidence). You let us cry on your shoulder and were brave enough to let your guard down and be vulnerable with us. You very quickly became our dear friend, our protector, our sweetheart.
You and I talked a lot about music and love and life and forgiveness and God. We talked a little about death, and not knowing exactly what comes next. We talked about doubt and faith, and how even when our belief is as small as a mustard seed, that can be enough to move mountains of worrying aside. You always said “Not giving up doesn’t mean you’re not scared; it just means you have the courage to move forward.”
My cancer notebook is filled with quotes & advice from you... you are so wise and so funny and such a big-hearted man, filled with loving-kindness and whipsmart humor.
“Not my circus, not my monkeys” (when we needed to let go of all the drama around us, and focus on getting healthy)
“Once you’re a pickle, you can’t go back to being a cucumber,” which friends of Bill W. may recognize; Joe borrowed this mantra from AA (which he didn’t personally attend) when he worked with HIV patients. (He shared it in support group when we talked about involuntarily being inducted into the very special “cancer club” and how it changed our lives and our world views. And how it brought us together ❤️ And made friends of strangers who might otherwise have never met: now all a bunch of pickles :) Just taking it one day at a time)
“I don’t want to do it, but I’m going to do it.” (taking treatments, we knew Joe’s chemo was particularly harsh and put him in so much pain and discomfort, but he was committed to following his doctor’s advice. He always said he had a lot worth living for, and he wanted to make the most of what time he had. His unflagging commitment to come to Gilda’s Club every Wednesday, even when he was feeling ill made all of us feel brave and inspired us to keep healing and keep our chins up.)
So from all your “girls,” your “special ladies,” and your “Princesses of NY,” we all love you madly; you are our prince, our knight in shining armor ❤️

Joe,
I will miss our long talks, laughter and just being good friends. Thanks for always being honest, respectful and a true gentleman. Your childhood, your teenage years and your adult years made me appreciate our conversations more. You were my buddy when I didn't see you at work I would send you a text message just to check in on you. Always willing to help out, even when you weren't feeling your best! My last text to you, said that I missed our chats!
You will be missed.
Thank you for our time of friendship!.
You were one of the good guys!
