Obituary of Inge Toner
Inge Toner, a former resident of Marine Park, Brooklyn, passed away on Thursday May 30, 2019 in her home in Rockaway Beach at the age of 80.
Inge was born May 19, 1939 in Nurnberg, Germany and was the daughter of the late Otto and Hella (Merle) Reis. Inge is survived by her loving children Anja (Kevin) Sullivan and Shaun (Mary) Toner, her beloved grandchildren Sean, Daniel, Kyra, Shane, Casey, Liam and Brendan and three nieces Maura, Geraldine and Sally. In addition to her parents, Inge is predeceased by her husband, Shaun, and her cherished daughters Michele and Patricia.
Inge survived World War II and never forgot the struggle. She did not complain during difficult times.
After marrying Shaun in Germany, she came to Brooklyn at the age of 21 to raise her family. While her children were young she would bring them back to Germany each summer to remind them of their German heritage.
Although Inge did not speak or read English well before moving to the United States, she became an avid reader and writer. She enjoyed reading all types of books, but her favorites were Harry Potter and Bill O’Reilly’s “Killing” series of books.
Inge was a great cook because she learned during wartime how to make something wonderful out of the simplest ingredients. Her cucumber salad was our favorite! Her love of cooking extended to a love of hospitality and making people feel welcome. Inge volunteered serving meals at Ground Zero with firemen friends after 9/11 and also volunteered serving meals on Thanksgiving for those who couldn’t cook.
She had a unique way of bringing a European touch to everything she did: whether it was eating at one of her many favorite restaurants, sending cards to family and friends and especially at Christmas time where we learned that Saint Nicholas is celebrated much differently than Santa Claus. Christmas will be the holiday when she will be missed the most.
We would like to thank Luz Torres and her family for their love and support and making Inge comfortable over the past few years. We could not have done this without you!
Inge was a wonderful example of what it is to give your family unconditional love. We will miss her but she will live forever in our memories
