I remember Detective Harry in the early 60's being at Marine Park being a positive influence with myself and all my teenage buddies. A truly wonderful man and a hell of a basketball player as well. Early 60's were a little rough in the park and he helped keep us safe.

I am very sad to hear about Harry's passing. I took a class with him at John Jay College. It was the very best class that I took at Jay. The class was: Investigating Sex Crimes. He made the course interesting because he shared some of his actual experiences from the streets. He helped me when I took some entry tests to various police departments. He was a very down to earth man. I got an "A" in his class because he was a real person speaking of actual cases. He made me look at women victims in a different light. I graduated from Jay in 1979 and caught up with him some time in the late 80's when he was giving a lecture to detectives. I just can't say enough about how much I enjoyed his class. It remains in my memory as the best time I had at Jay. Rest in peace!
Thank you Harry...Sgt. Ramon Acevedo, Retired

Although just his presence loomed large and maybe even sparked a feeling of “fear”, we knew he cared!!! The PS 222 “After-School Center” gave the boys a physical outlet with hockey, basketball etc., while “the girls” did crafts and took guitar lessons - I loved & was blessed by it!!!

Cops are special people. Sgt. Harry O'Reilly, NYPD, was a cop's cop.
I met Harry in the early 1970's. He came to Atlanta on the Middle Management Exchange Program. This was a program where NYPD sent a Captain, Lieutenant, and a Sergeant to the Atlanta Police Department, and we sent the same to NYPD to study every aspect of the others’ departments and come back with recommendations as to how to improve our respective departments. The TV show McCloud starring Dennis Weaver was a take-off on this program.
I was a Sergeant in the Intelligence Division of the APD. Harry came into our office on his first day in Atlanta. Captain Julian Spence, Lieutenant Frank Hynes, and I spent a good part of the day acclimating him to the southern experience of Atlanta in general and APD in particular.
That night, a night club we had under investigation in Atlanta was having a press party for its much anticipated grand opening. The night club was The Bachelor's III. It was being operated by some of the same people who operated the Bachelor's III night club in NYC which was affiliated with organized crime and Joe Namath fame. We commandeered Harry to go with us to the press party to identify any organized crime figures from NYC that he may recognize.
Prior to going to the party, Frank Hynes and I introduced Harry to an Atlanta landmark known as the Varsity. The Varsity was the largest drive-in restaurant in the world located near Georgia Tech. When Georgia Tech plays a home football game, they run thousands of people through the restaurant. The lines to get your food are very long, but they keep moving. When you get to the head of the line, you best know what you want as the person taking the order barks instructions, "What da ya have? What da ya have?" The hot dogs and hamburgers come down a conveyor belt, the order taker takes your money, gives you your change, and yells out your order to another who takes your food off of the conveyor belt and puts it in a box. You keep moving, pick up your drink order, and go find a table. I told Harry to know what he wants when he gets to the head of the line, or he might get trampled.
When Harry got to the head of the line and the man yelled, "What da ya have? What da ya have?" Harry said in his New York accent, "Gimme two franks and a soda!" To which the man asked louder, "What da ya have? What da ya have? And Harry said louder, "Gimme two franks a soda!" The man asked in a much louder voice, "What da ya have? What da ya have?" Harry yelled back, "GIVE- ME -TWO- FRANKS- AND- A -SODA!!!
Frank and I were behind him in line in tears, laughing. I looked up to the guy taking the order and told him, "Give him two dawgs and a Coca-Cola." To which the man said, "Well, why didn't he say that?" Then he looked at me and asked, "What da ya have? What da ya have?" I gave him my order. The line started moving again. Order at the Varsity was restored...
We went on to the Bachelor's III grand opening, and as a result of our investigation with Harry's assistance, we were able to revoke their liquor license.
We had many great times with Harry during his stay in Atlanta. We developed a deep friendship which led to a lot of kidding of each other as cops will do. Much of the good natured kidding was the North/South thing. Harry referred to us as the rednecks, hicks, or hillbillies. We referred to him as the sophisticated New Yorker who knew everything there was to know.
At the end of his stay in Atlanta, his family came down to Georgia. We had a party out at Capt. Spence's place on Lake Jackson. We had a great time, and most of the kids fished on the lake until the game warden came by and cited the kids for fishing without a license. We ended up getting the Governor’s Office to intervene and resolve the matter.
Over the years, I visited Harry in New York, and he came to visit me in Atlanta. On one of Harry's visits, we had to hunker down in the hallway of my house in the middle of the night when a tornado came through my yard and took out three huge pine trees.
On a visit to Harry in New York, we left his office to eat lunch and decided to get hot dogs from a sidewalk vendor. I told Harry to watch what I was about to do. I told the hot dog vendor in my best New York accent, "Give me two franks and a soda." The vendor gave me two hot dawgs and a Coca-Cola. And I did it without a translator! (Hillbillies. Ha!)
I lost contact with Harry for over forty years. He retired from NYPD. I left APD and became a federal agent with the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Labor Racketeering. I worked organized crime in Buffalo, NY, for 6 years; spent a year as a Staff Investigator for the President's Commission on Organized Crime in Washington, D.C.; and was later transferred back to work at the Organized Crime Strike Force in Atlanta where I retired in 2005. About 10 years later, having gone back to work as a federal agent for Homeland Security and then the Department of Defense, I met another agent named Jimmy Giery who was retired from NYPD.
I asked him if during his time with NYPD, he had ever known Harry O'Reilly. He asked, "You mean Sgt. Harry O'Reilly?" He advised me Harry used to change his diaper when he was a child. It turns out Jimmy's dad was a NYPD cop, was good friends with Harry, and they lived in the same neighborhood. I asked him if he knew of any way to get in touch with Harry, and he said he had Harry's number on his cell phone. He called Harry, put me on the phone, and we talked for an hour! As luck would have it, Harry was coming to Colorado, where I was living, to teach a law enforcement class on homicide investigation in two weeks. My girlfriend and I had dinner with Harry and a retired FBI agent who was working with Harry. We talked and laughed for hours. It was like we had never been apart.
Over the years, Frank, Julian, and I developed a special bond with Harry because well, Harry was just special. We spent a lot of time with Harry sharing stories of our police experiences. Some were funny, some not so much. Many were tales of bravery and valor on the part of the men and women we worked with.
One of my first Captains on APD told me something that left a lasting impression on me. I tried to use his wisdom throughout my career. He said that in order to go far in police work, you need two bones. You need a back bone, and you need a funny bone. Harry had both! God, I loved that guy, Sgt. Harry O'Reilly, New York's Finest...

Harry was truly unique. One of a kind. His limitless energy, his wit, his infectious laugh, his knowledgeability about almost anything, his generosity and his big heart made him a joy to be around. He treated everyone as if they were family, always concerned for your welfare, forgiving of your faults yet demanding that you get your head out of you know where when you needed it.
When I got home from Vietnam, Harry threw a welcome home party for me and Dino McCarthy, a guy I hardly knew and a fellow VN vet who had lost an eye over there. The party at Harry's house lasted 3 days, with food, music and of course more than enough alcohol. He went back and forth to work all during the festivities, always making sure there was enough to eat and drink before he caught a nap and hustled back to his job. All in a day's work for Harry.
After I finally graduated from college, Harry got me a job teaching at Marine Park JHS and saw to it that I got to run a special program at the school, a job I got solely based on Harry's word that I was better suited for it than others with much higher credentials. I have been forever grateful to him for that experience.
I had not seen Harry in too many years, but we stayed in touch occasionally. I called him a few times over the past few months and wanted to visit him on my way upstate to see my sister. But he didn't want me to see him. On one of the phone calls, we were exchanging jokes, quips, insults and stories and laughing so hard that Harry said "Listen, kid, laughing hurts now. I can't do this. I got to hang up".
That's when I knew that things were really not good. And Harry was right. I'm glad my image of him is just the way he would want it-boundless energy, a joke or an anecdote every minute, a gleam in his eye as he contemplated his next prank or related his latest escapade. All while he was doing what cops have to do and writing speeches and books and helping God knows how many people the same way he had helped me.
God Bless you, Harry, and may He bless your wonderful family and all of those you touched in your amazing journey through this life.
