Obituary of Naomi L. Greene
Naomi Leonora Greene was called to heaven on Sunday, September 22nd 2019. She was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, West Indies to the late Simeon James and the late Margaret Veronica Caruth. She received her early education in Tobago and later attended Ideal High School. She was employed by the Trinidad and Tobago Elections and Boundaries Commission, where she also served as team captain for the Netball team. In 1969, she immigrated to the United States to establish a new life with her husband, George, six children and sister. In both her private and public life, she had a passion and desire to help others, especially kids and young adults. It was common for the people she befriended, mentored, or counseled to call her “Mama Greene”. A graduate of Medgar Evers College (BSN), Naomi worked her way through the nursing ranks from a Nursing Assistant to a Registered Nurse. Recently retired as Nurse Manager for the New York City Administration for Children Services, she worked hard to ensure the safety and medical care of children. Her highly regarded service to the City was reflected in many awards and citations received during her tenure of 20 plus years. Naomi Greene leaves behind a legacy of dedicated service. A beloved member of St. Gabriel’s Episcopal Church, Naomi Greene had the privilege of being an active member for nearly 50 years. She truly enjoyed the church’s annual “International Day” parade where, in more recent years, she and dog, Louie, would lead the celebratory procession. Naomi was the sitting President of the St. Gabriel Episcopal Christian Women’s group and enjoyed organizing church functions and events. She was also the past president of the St. Gabriel’s Trinidad and Tobago Association. Honored with numerous awards, she cherished the Bishop’s Medal received in 2018. She was also an honorary member of the Women’s League of Science and Medicine, Incorporated. Naomi traveled extensively, enjoying trips with her children and grandchildren, including annual excursions to Aruba with daughter, Beverly. In August 2017, she cruised to Cuba with eighteen family members. Her beloved son, Christopher, preceded her in death. She is survived by: Children: Glenford (Joselyn), Beverly, Charmaine (Clay), Nigel (Joyce) and Reginald. Grandchildren: Lance (Courtney), Ashley, Justin, Reginald Jr, Gabrielle, Emanuel, Alexis, Miles, Aliah, Kianna, Celeste, Evan, Darin, Vivian, Christopher, Grace and Madison.
