Obituary of Vincent P. Salerno

Vincent Peter Salerno was born in Brooklyn, NY to Vincent David and Josephine Frances (Scozzari) on August 22, 1953. He attended Holy Family elementary school in Canarsie, then Canarsie High School and Bronx Community College. He owned The Record Hut in Brooklyn for many years and later became a security guard before retiring. Vincent passed away May 2, 2020 in the hospital due to complications from Covid19.

Vincent loved to play acoustic and electric guitars, travel, and adored large and small animals, especially dogs. Vincent also had a passion for live music, playing in many bands throughout his lifetime. He loved doo-wop music and rock & roll but was open to any and all music. He was a walking music encyclopedia, knowing many band and member facts. West Side Story was one of his favorite films and soundtracks.

All Manhattan neighborhoods were his backyard, and he enjoyed the nuances of the people and architecture of all areas but especially Union Square where he conversed with various rally members and listened to their plights.

Vincent was grateful for the small things in life. He was grateful for a peaceful life, a roof over his head, money to buy what he needed and the people who loved & supported him. He had a quiet faith in God, always believing but also striving.

Vincent enjoyed many good times on and around Coney Island Beach, taking in the fresh sea air, helping his nephews Adam and Andrew build sandcastles and sampling a tasty treat or two or three.

He is survived by: his sisters Suzann Elkhouly (Mohamed) and Nancy Peckis (Peter); nephews Adam Elkhouly, Andrew Elkhouly and Jason Peckis; niece Justina Jo Stissi; great nephews Christopher Stissi, Samuel Peckis and Matthew Peckis; great nieces Ava Stissi and Lily Peckis.

Our family is grateful for the doctors, nurses and all staff at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center for making Vincent's last days comfortable and pain-free. Our heartfelt thanks to all the staff, without exception, for their compassion, kindness, patience, competence, and generous spirit during this horrible Covid19 pandemic.

Vincent is in peace and in God's loving and merciful arms now. He lost his best friend when his late mother Josephine passed away in 2007 and now they are joyously together for eternity, flying on the wings of angels. God wanted him now. God set him free...
