Mr. John Gilleece was an outstanding Gentleman, teacher & mentor & showman. My son had the wonderful opportunity to have him as a dedicated teacher. John encouraged my son David to participate in an Irish show a number of years ago. I also had the wonderful opportunity to work with John when I was President of the PTA of Kingsborough High School. It was through John’s dedicated efforts to establish and enhance the school to flourish. Thank you Dear, kind sir, you were admired & loved by many. You will be missed by many as well. You have enhanced & changed many people’s lives. Thank you.

John always was a master showman ,who did everything with a theatrical flair. As a founding teacher of Leon M Goldstein High School, (then known as Kingsborough High School) he taught Humanities English and he was the school's first Coordinator of Student Affairs. I joined the school ini its second year. At the first assembly, John introduced the new staff to the student body. He had his student government officers form an Honor Guard, They formed an archway and held up decorative swords as each staff member crossed the arch and mounted the dais. We felt like royalty. That was my introduction to the magical stagecraft of John Gilleece.
Years later, he invited me to join him at his and our enterprise of love, the Rockaway Theater Company. I shared the stage with him in the RTC's productions of The Pajama Game and The Fiddler of the Roof, and he gave me my start in directing by engaging me to direct the RTC's production of Barefoot in the Park. He set the bar very high with all of his productions. Everyone in the RTC who has directed or performed at the Post Theater, has done their level best to meet his exceptional standards. That will never change. He remains a beacon, a compass, our North Star, as we strive to keep his legacy alive and to produce quality productions worthy of our beloved founder and Artistic Director.

Mr Gilleece was my 7 th grade teacher at John Wilson 212. He was one of the best teachers I ever had. He was caring, interesting, engaging and an all around good guy. I remember him producing and directing all the performances at the school. My fondest memory was that he never criticized or put a student down. He was a lift me up kind of guy. Farewell until your students see you again. One of a kind.

Thank you John for the help and support you gave my daughter Kristen at RTC . You cast a long shadow across the stage . I have no doubt your theatrical light is now shining bright on the other side of the curtain. Thank you.

From the age of 9 John has been a crucial part in making me who I am today. John was a role model for many, with his outgoing personality and how approachable he was to all. John allowed me a on grow and come out of my shell. Becoming more confident in myself and well as providing me with a place which became my second home. I do appreciate all you have done and for me over the past 11years. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for you. Word can’t describe how I feel right now but all I want to say is a Thank you.

I owe a great deal of thanks to John. As a troubled teen drop out from South Shore HS, John helped me get into a ‘Second Chance’ program, where he prepped me to take the GED exam, and taught me several important lessons about life. John’s energy and positivity propelled me forward, and eventually I graduated from Brooklyn College and became very successful in business. I have never forgotten John’s kindness and have often thought of him all these years later. May his memory be an everlasting comfort to his family and friends. He was a great man!

My dearest Godfather & Uncle John aka Uncle “Drake” (as my Brothers & I lovingly nicknamed him back in the late 70’s). Such fond memories of you & all the Gilleece’s as a young kid growing up in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn when our families lived just 4 blocks apart with our Aunt Maureen & Cousin Lisa living right in-between both families. From all the home movies, family gatherings/celebrations, trips to Rocky Woods & all your theatre productions & sing-a-longs in recent memory, there was never a dull/boring moment with you in the mix. Such a wonderful story teller with a very distinct & powerful/captivating voice & hardy/infectious laugh which will always make me smile whenever thought of. You were my Dad’s best friend & I absolutely know why he held you in such high regard. You will be sorely missed by us all but your kindred spirit will live on & you will be thought of quite often by your family & all the lasting friendships you made over the years & whenever any of us do we’ll be sure to crack a smile for all the joy you brought to each & everyone of us. Thanks for always just being you !
Love,
Nephew/Godson Andy G.
