Obituary of Debra Stewart

Hello friends and family,

It is with heavy hearts that my sister and I share the news of our mother's passing. Her health recently declined while in rehabilitation for a broken hip, and she peacefully left us on February 10th 2024 at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
She was born in Knightstown, Indiana to Marjorie and Jules Elzey on June 10th, 1952. She grew up with her older brother Barry. After moving to NYC in the 90s, she met her husband John Stewart. They spent 3 wonderful years together until John's passing in 1999. She worked as a librarian in the NYC Department of Education for 16 years, retiring in 2014. She adopted me from China in 2001 and then my younger sister, Alissa from Mongolian in 2005.
Our mother filled our home with love, laughter and a zoo of pets. She had a passion for helping animals and loved her pets dearly. She spent her retired years taking classes at Kingsborough Community College, even earning an additional associates degree, and donating items to others on community Facebook groups. Our mother always enjoyed learning and helping others. She loved striking up a conversation with anyone who passed by and always put smiles on other's faces.
In honoring her memory, my sister and I have decided to have a private service. We appreciate all the love and support during this difficult time.
Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts.
Warm Regards,
Annilese and Alissa Stewart
