Jimmy was always a great friend and firefighter. He always had time to help at work and all other times. His devotion to family both past and present was clearly evident. Janice and his children were utmost in his actions and love. He always talked about his father which clearly showed his devotion. His choice of music though was poor; bagpipes, bagpipes and more bagpipes.

Joe Russo: I had the pleasure of sharing an office with Jim during his years at Engine 254. Jim was always in top of things and kept everything running smoothly. He was very generous in sharing his deep knowledge of firefighting with the troops and kept them safe in the foreground. Jim was intensely loyal to the company, to the FDNY,,to his family and to the USA. We were one of the few fire stations with a flag displayed honoring those lost and missing service men and women.thanks to Jim’s efforts.
Jim will be missed by all . Please accept my deepest condolences to the entire Cooney family. Until we meet again Jim, rest in eternal peace.

Jim was a great big brother. He always supported me in my baseball days from Little League through HS ball at Brooklyn Tech. He bought my gloves (I still have both fielder and catcher’s mitt).
Jim also let me (I think) keep an eye on his 69 Camaro while he was in the Navy. I must have put a 100 miles on it just backing out and driving back into our garage. One day I was on Everett Avenue and driving a bit spirited. The linkage jammed and I was heading to the water. I was a new driver and was in a panic. I stopped the car and thought it was going to explode. Danny Rodgers came out of nowhere and helped me shut it down. I’m not sure Jim knew about that adventure
