Obituary of Adelina J. Laqui

Ms. Adelina J. Laqui, 78, of Brooklyn entered into eternal rest on October 19, 2024.  She passed away from complications due to Acute Myeloid Leukemia.  Adelina was born on January 31, 1946 in Quezon City, Philippines and is the daughter of the late Dr. Emiterio Laqui and Victoria Jose Laqui.  She is the third eldest of seven children and the beloved sister to Cecilia Laqui-Pili, Agerico Laqui, Aurora Laqui, Philemon Laqui, Manuel Laqui, and Ramon Laqui.  Adelina is also the cherished aunt to several nieces and nephews.  She is lovingly known as “Didi” to her family.

Adelina graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a Bachelors of Science in Architecture.  In 1976, Adelina immigrated to Brooklyn where she worked as a custom design furniture builder.  She had a fascination and admiration for the form, structure, and style of how things were built.  She spent hours reading Architectural Digest and watching programs on home construction and interior design.  Adelina was particularly fond of houses that incorporated massive aquariums into their walls.  She was extremely dexterous, and her skills were tantamount to assisting her nieces and nephews with their school projects.  Her nieces still talk about some of her epic creations: a three-foot wide solar system housed in a dome made of paper mâché, a Nipa hut elevated by toothpicks, and a 3D map of the Philippines showcasing the country’s natural resources.

Adelina was quiet, kind, and had a gentle temperament.  She was often seen deep in thought or observing the world around her.  While she wasn’t the most talkative, she did have a naughty sense of humor and found entertainment in mundane things.

As an active member of the Roman Catholic Church, Adelina combined her love of music and devotion to the Church by joining parish choirs.  She and her sister, Aurora, were choir members of St. Brendan’s for nearly 15 years, and prior to that, sang in the choir at Our Lady of Help of Christians for 10 years.  The pinnacle of her choir journey occurred in 2009 when she, Aurora, and the Glenn Mohr Chorale traveled to perform in Rome.

After Adelina retired, she spent many days socializing and exercising at the Council Center for Senior Citizens.  Her favorite activities were drumming, tai chi, dancing, and coloring.

Adelina is survived by five of her siblings- Agerico, Aurora, Philemon, Manuel, and Ramon as well as her nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be on Saturday October 26, 2024 at St. Brendan's Roman Catholic Church at 10:00 AM. 1525 East 12th Street Brooklyn, NY 11230.

Committal service will immediately follow to Green-Wood Crematory. 500 25th Street Brooklyn, NY 11232.
