Obituary of Frederick P. Wilken
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Fred P. Wilken, on December 27, 2024 at the age of 85. He is survived by his lovely and devoted wife of over 61 years, Linda. Together, they had four beautiful children: Carole and husband Rob, Frederick and wife Bernadette {deceased}, Peter and wife Camille, and Linda. Fred had ten amazing grandchildren: Christopher and wife Jessica, Robert, Caitlin, Stephen and wife Katelyn, Alison, Peter James, Jason, Victoria, Brianna, and Zekherie. Fred was blessed with two Great Grandchildren, Patrick and Sophia, within the past 20 months.
Fred’s career was a Custodial Engineer at St. Francis College and then at St. Therese of Lisieux Church and School. He often did many side jobs in plumbing and heating repairs, welding and Ceramics. Fred was a Eucharistic Minister at Mary Queen of Heaven Church and his hobbies included painting, fishing and music.
As a volunteer EMT for over 35 years with Flatlands Volunteer Ambulance and First Aid Corps. (FVAC), he served as Past Captain, First Lieutenant, Training Officer, Safety Officer and House Officer. He helped thousands of neighbors and strangers; assisted in the delivery of at least five babies; and received a number of Life Saving Awards. He shared his vast knowledge with many as an educator of numerous Emergency Medical Technician, CPR and First Aid, and Defensive Driving classes. Fred also played Santa as a fund raiser for FVAC, for his Daughter Linda’s pre-K students and his Grandchildren. Some people spend their whole life wondering “Did I make a difference?”, Fred didn’t need to wonder!
