Joan's Grandchildren (Brianna) posted a condolence
Sunday, April 14, 2019
Where do you begin? How do you describe in a short speech someone that means so much to you?My family and I were fortunate enough to have had such a close relationship with my Grandma. She was the strongest lady and a tough defender of her family her entire life. As I've been told, my Aunt Peggy used to say, "Hit them Joan and hit them good!" She was quite honestly the glue that held us together.
Despite being sick, she kept a strong face and made time for everyone. When the phone rang with a request for a visit, she never said no. She was always up to chat with nieces, nephews, neighbors and most importantly, her baby brother and partner in crime, my Uncle Tommy. She lived for their five minute phone calls every night during Wheel of Fortune and his Wednesday visits. She loved her baby brother very much.
Although we are all upset that she's gone, it's better to reflect on the beautiful memories we all made with her. She was so much fun to be around. Honestly, there were times I wouldn't go out with my friends just so I could stay home and watch "Law and Order" with her. Having her live with us was a gift I'll be forever thankful for. On occasion, she would get her days and nights mixed up. She would wake up at 6 in the evening looking for the newspaper and requesting eggs. This was then follow by a "Blue Bloods" marathon while chowing down on Cheetos and cheesecake until 2 in the morning.
Grandma loved a good bargain. I'll miss our shopping excursions to BJ's; she used to drive the motor cart down the aisle while looking at the shelves and people would have to dodge her cart. I'd follow behind apologizing to all of the pedestrians she nearly struck. She never got her drivers license and everyone in BJ's knew it.
Sometimes I feel that I was too entertained by my grandma. Thursdays were an exciting day for her. That's the day coupon packages were delivered to the doorstep. If any of Grandma's neighbors sitting here today are wondering why they didn't receive their own coupon package on Thursdays, you did. I'm her accomplice and must admit that if your car wasn't in your driveway, your newly delivered package of coupons were snatched up by me at my Grandmothers's request.
Joanie Babes lived a full life. When the doctor told her that they needed to begin to treat her symptoms rather than her cancer, he asked her what her feelings were and if she was worried for what was to come: her response was "Why would I waste time and worry about something that's out of my control." Her connection with God was strong and it was evident that her faith provided her with comfort throughout some of her hardest days.
She didn't spend time worrying about what was to come, she just enjoyed every moment and that's a beautiful way to live. My Grandma had a full life. She was happily married to my Grandpa for over sixty years, raised three daughters and welcomed six grandchildren all of whom she took remarkable care of. She also saw two of her grandchildren get married and even got to meet her two great grandchildren. Of course we're all sad that she's gone and we're going to miss her; but it's comforting to know that she's now reunited with Grandpa in Heaven.
We love you Grandma, Rest In Peace.
